This course emphasizes the importance of theory and theory development in management and organizational research. It addresses the often-overlooked process of theorizing by training participants to critically read and interpret theory in academic articles. 

Through exercises, assignments, and readings, students also develop their own theory-building skills for use in their research.

This course introduces PhD students to the foundations of becoming a management scholar. It explores the purpose and impact of management research, emphasizing the importance of constructive feedback, mentorship, and academic collaboration. In the short term, students will engage with key literature and the review process; in the long term, the course aims to integrate students into the scholarly community and support their development as successful researchers.

This hands-on course helps PhD students develop the skills needed to write compelling and well-structured introductions for their academic work. Focusing on genres of contributions, problematization strategies, audience awareness, and writing techniques, students will draft and refine their own introductions through practical exercises and peer feedback. 

By the end of the course, participants will be equipped to frame their research questions effectively and critically engage with their own and others’ writing.

This highly interactive course is designed to help participants become confident and compelling academic presenters. Through group sessions, video-taped presentations, and personalized coaching, students learn to engage audiences, manage challenges, and deliver clear, impactful messages. 

The course emphasizes both content delivery and presentation style, aiming to build strong, confident communicators ready for academic and professional settings.

This course introduces PhD students to key principles, values, and codes of conduct related to scientific integrity in academic research. Through interactive discussions, case analyses, and assignments, participants explore real-world integrity dilemmas and develop strategies to promote ethical research practices. 

The course also includes sessions on Open Science and Research Data Management, serving as a foundation for future methodological and publishing-related training.

The course is offered several times a year. You are strongly advised to take this course as close as possible and prior to your actual supervision task, so that you can put what you have learned into practice. This course is compulsory to those who started in August 2020 or later in the ERIM Fulltime PhD Programme.
