Prof. Jeroen Temperman has been appointed professor of ‘International Law and Religion in interdisciplinary context’ (1 FTE) within the section International and European Union Law (IEUL) with effect from 1 September 2018.
This ordinary chair of prof. Temperman is a continuation of his endowed chair of the same name. His research focuses on issues of law and religion, including issues such as corporate religious freedom, religious hatred, religious symbols in public space and religious freedom in prison. In addition, Professor Temperman studies issues such as how to deal with religion in (public) education, or the impact of different state religion models on human rights protection.

Prof. Temperman obtained his PhD in 2009 at the Irish Centre for Human Rights, a research centre of the National University of Ireland (Galway); his dissertation was entitled State-Religion Relationships and Human Rights Law: Towards a Right to Religiously Neutral Governance.
Prof. Temperman is the co-founder of the Erasmus Institute for Public Knowledge (EIPK), an interdisciplinary research institute on public issues, for scientists from the social sciences and humanities.
