The world is changing, Rotterdam is changing. Terms such as sustainability, digitization, artificial intelligence and ecology can no longer be ignored. But what does the sustainable, digital future look like? What awaits us?
In this Erasmus Alumni Lecture, 3 speakers take us along and we hear more about transport, the city and the port of the future, focusing on our beautiful “rotstad” Rotterdam. The lecture will be in Dutch and live subtitled in English.

The transport of the future
Maarten Poot is one of the founders of felyx, a scale-up that offers shared electric scooters via an app as a new mobility concept. With growing urbanization and decreasing air quality, the transition to sustainable and shared mobility solutions is of great importance. In addition, increasing pressure on public space also means that we have to look at a transition towards compact “light electric vehicles” instead of individual and underutilized forms of transport. Felyx's concept and vision are fully aligned with these global themes. The presentation will reflect on this and discuss how a concept such as felyx contributes to shaping the sustainable transport of the future. Maarten studied Financial Economics at the Erasmus School of Economics and obtained his master's degree in 2014.
The port of the future
Maurice Jansen is a senior researcher at Erasmus Urban Ports and Transport Economics. He is involved in port education and conducts research into port strategy, port development and port innovation ecosystems. He sees port cities as breeding grounds for talent, technological innovation and entrepreneurship. He recently completed research into talent and future talent profiles for "Rotterdam Maritime Capital of Europe", a collaboration of the Rotterdam business community, the Port of Rotterdam Authority and regional authorities around Rotterdam. In his presentation on port innovation ecosystems, he will explain the challenges facing the Rotterdam port and industrial complex in the light of the energy transition and digitization. In his presentation he will show how the port and city of Rotterdam wants to develop into a sustainable and inclusive port innovation ecosystem. Maurice studied Business Administration with a specialization in Strategic Management and Environment. After a career as a supply chain consultant, he focused on port education and research at Erasmus University as well as for companies and other universities.
The smart digital city of the future
Marcel van Oosterhout is an associate executive director at the Erasmus Center for Data Analytics (ECDA), the center of excellence for multidisciplinary insight into data, Artificial Intelligence and digitization at Erasmus University Rotterdam. Last year he led a European study into the use of data and urban data platforms in 80 cities in Europe. In his presentation on the data-driven city, he will use various examples to discuss the application possibilities of such platforms for more efficient services, support for policy, but also opportunities for innovation, sustainability and strengthening social inclusion. In addition, the main drivers and barriers are discussed. Marcel studied Business Administration at the Rotterdam School of Management and obtained his PhD in 2010 on the subject “business agility and information technology in service organizations”
