Global citizenship is a highly contested term, yet it is at the heart of higher education institutions’ missions of today. An increasing globalized and interconnected world has guided the internationalization of education. Internationalization efforts, be it through curricula or student mobility, aim at promoting global citizenship in students. But one question remains of interest to researchers, practitioners, and students: what is global citizenship? This is the starting point of this presentation.
Through a review, three main approaches to studying global citizenship from the field of education and social psychology will be presented and integrated. An empirical example will be presented to showcase the importance of addressing these approaches in higher education. The main aim is to reflect on the complexities of global citizenship and highlight opportunities for future research in higher education.
