Below is a brief summary of the dissertation:
How do we have meaningful conversations about the future of human DNA? Recent advances in genetics make it increasingly possible to modify DNA with unprecedented precision. In the future, such technologies may be used to prevent serious inherited diseases by making changes to human embryos. These developments raise not only scientific questions, but also broader societal and ethical questions about the kind of future we wish to create. Around the world, scientists, policymakers, and international organizations have therefore called for public dialogue about these technologies. Yet a practical question often remains unanswered: what does a good public dialogue actually look like? This thesis addresses that question through research on the Dutch DNA-Dialogue, a nationwide public dialogue on the future of genetic technologies. The findings suggest that there is no universal blueprint for public dialogue. Effective dialogue depends on the specific technology, the goals of the dialogue, and the social context in which it takes place. Rather than aiming to produce consensus, public dialogue can create opportunities for reflection, mutual learning, and informed judgement. Participants in the Dutch DNA Dialogue gained a deeper understanding of the issues involved, developed greater appreciation for different perspectives, and became better equipped to form their own views, while differences of opinion often remained. The thesis further shows that discussions centered on concrete applications tend to be more meaningful than abstract discussions about technology. It also explores how creative approaches, including art and design, can help people engage with complex and uncertain technological futures.
