On 1 February 2022, C.A. Sewalt will defend her PhD dissertation, entitled: ‘Trauma Systems Revisited: A methodological perspective on organization of care’.

Over the past decades, trauma systems have been established worldwide in order to improve trauma care. The beginnings of trauma systems in the United States can be found during the American Civil War (1861-1865), after which trauma systems with designated trauma centers were developed. The goal of these trauma systems is to have all the resources  necessary for immediate and definitive care of critically injured patients. The first important component of trauma systems is the prehospital organization of trauma care. Prehospital decision making is difficult due to uncertainty of injury severity and geographical features. The second important component of trauma systems is the in-hospital organization of trauma
care. Designated trauma centers (higher-level trauma centers) were established for severely injured patients but it is unclear which patients truly benefit from admission to Level-1 trauma centers. This thesis aims to evaluate the current organization of trauma care in order to improve outcomes of trauma patients.

The PhD defences will not take place publicly in the usual way. A live stream link has been provided to candidate. The ceremony will begin exactly at 10:30.
