Summary:

The results of the present thesis emphasize the importance of genomic instability in inducing ageing-related problems. DNA damage appears to play a central role in triggering cardiovascular diseases, which cause a huge burden on the healthcare system. Therefore, exploring the association between DNA damage and cardiovascular disease via ageing models is a useful approach to address the questions in that field. At this stage, genetic epidemiological research supports an association between DNA repair gene single nucleotide polymorphisms and telomere attrition with cardiovascular remodelling and risk. Moreover, some progeria syndromes based on DNA repair defects are featured by cardiovascular death. Thus, DNA damage in human cardiovascular disease might also play a predictive role
