Dissertation in short:
In this thesis, we examined the hypothesis that adverse environmental exposures in fetal life and early childhood, along with genetic susceptibility, could lead to an increase or decrease
of acute otitis media (AOM) in early childhood. Further, we examined the hypothesis that epigenetic mechanisms exist, which may be influenced during fetal life and could explain
altered susceptibility to AOM in the first years of a child’s life. Finally, we examine if early sensorineural hearing loss (SNHL) could be a long-term adverse outcome of endured acute
otitis media (AOM) episodes in childhood. By gaining better understanding of the complex pathogenesis of AOM, we hope to learn which children are most susceptible to this disease,
where earlier clinical intervention may have the most impact tailored to the individual patient and help prevent AOM altogether.
