Immersive virtual reality (VR) technology has recently gained interest by the medical community. In this thesis, various applications of immersive VR technology have been studied in the context of the specialty of heart and lung surgery. Specifically, the value of VR in organizing remote multidisciplinary meetings, preoperative planning, and reality-like clinical simulations have been developed and studied. By exploring the benefits and limitations of the aforementioned VR-based applications, this thesis aims to pave the way for future development and implementation of immersive, exponential, and digital technologies in the field of cardiothoracic surgery.
The PhD defences do not take place publicly in the usual way in the Senate Hall at campus Woudestein or in the Professor Andries Querido Room at the Erasmus MC. The candidates will defend their dissertation either in a small group or online.
