Summary:
Thyroid surgery has many indications, from benign thyroid nodules and Graves' disease to (suspected) thyroid cancer. Although survival of patients with thyroid disease, including thyroid cancer, is excellent, surgical treatment can involve complications and a serious burden for these patients. Thus, the benefits of surgical treatment will always have to outweigh its risks. The first part of this thesis therefore provides insight into the refinement possibilities of surgical and non-surgical strategies in patients with various thyroid disorders. In the second part, we will focus on hypoparathyroidism, the main complication after thyroid surgery.
