Dissertation in short:
This thesis reports 8 studies performed in the last few years in a large cohort of healthy children aged 0-5 years, the Sophia Pluto study. This thesis provides
detailed data on the longitudinal assessment of body composition from early life to childhood and new reference values for body fat and fat free mass in young children until the age of 5 years. Furthermore it improves knowledge about early determinants of adiposity programming, especially about plasma metabolomics, which could potentially be used as biomarkers to predict which infants are prone to develop an unfavorable body composition later in life. Lastly it provides new insights in a potential group of hazardous chemical substances; PFAS. This thesis is the first to describe in detail the PFAS plasma concentration in infants from 0-2 years of age and their most important exposure pathways, such as transplacental transmission and breastfeeding.
