Below is a brief summary of the dissertation:
The aim of this thesis is to provide insight in the failure of re-usable duodenoscope disinfection. It focusses on the background, cause and consequences of re-usable duodenoscope contamination. Furthermore, two methods to monitor endoscope reprocessing are investigated. We also took a look regarding the potential consequences of contaminated duodenoscopes by establishing a bare minimum risk estimate of duodenoscope-associated infections (DAI) in the Netherlands and retrospectively investigating whether DAI’s had unnoticed taken place in our own institution. Lastly, we investigated whether a novel fast drying method could prevent contamination and discuss how single-use duodenoscopes (SUDs) could be implemented in the endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP) practice to prevent the spread of multidrug-resistant microorganisms (MDRO).
