On Tuesday 2 June 2020, J.J. Tolk will defend his PhD dissertation, entitled: ‘Expectations and Outcome in Knee and Hip Arthroplasty’.

This thesis reports on outcome measurement and outcome expectations in patients undergoing total knee arthroplasty (TKA) or total hip arthroplasty (THA). Furthermore, it was investigated whether expectation management can increase satisfaction after knee prosthesis surgery.

The studies described in this thesis show that improved preoperative expectation management changed patients' expectations. This resulted in a higher rate of postoperative expectation and ultimately higher postoperative satisfaction in the patients who attended the information session.

In addition, we found that questionnaires that patients routinely complete for the national orthopedic implant register, can be used to predict the outcome after a knee replacement. This prediction can be used to further individualize expectation management in the future.

The PhD defences will not take place publicly in the Senate Hall or Professor Andries Queridoroom due to the coronavirus. The candidates will defend their thesis online.
