Below is a brief summary of the dissertation:

Adults with intellectual disabilities are at increased risk of cardiovascular disease, partly due to higher rates of risk factors such as obesity, hypertension, and physical inactivity. They also face barriers to maintaining a healthy lifestyle and accessing appropriate healthcare, contributing to persistent health inequalities.
This PhD research investigated whether Progressive Resistance Exercise Training (PRET) can improve cardiovascular risk factors and overall health in adults with intellectual disabilities. It also explored optimal training intensity, methods for assessing muscle mass, and broader health outcomes.
The findings show that resistance training can positively influence cardiovascular risk factors. In the intervention study, PRET led to a significant reduction in low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol, along with improvements in lower-body strength and certain aspects of challenging behaviour, such as irritability and hyperactivity. Other outcomes, including body composition and daily functioning, showed limited change. Participant adherence was a major challenge, with a dropout rate of 28%.
Overall, this research suggests that PRET is a promising and feasible intervention for improving health in adults with intellectual disabilities. However, sustained participation, tailored support, and a multidisciplinary approach, including lifestyle and environmental factors, are essential to maximise its benefits. These findings provide important guidance for clinical practice, policy, and future research aimed at reducing health inequalities in this population.
