Dissertation in short:
Increasing the number of hemiarthroplasties performed annually by the surgeon will decrease the rate of prosthesis related infections.
A surgical resident in training can safely perform a hip hemiarthroplasty without increasing complication rates, if supervised by an experienced surgeon.
A cemented unipolar hemiarthroplasty is recommended for a femoral neck fracture to reduce dislocation, peri-prosthetic fractures and reoperations
Prevention of reoperations after hip hemiarthroplasty decreases the rate of prosthesis related infections.
The minimally invasive anterolateral approach is a safe alternative for the traditional anterolateral approach, with similar risk of complications and death.
Current mortality risk prediction tools are less adequate than clinical assessment by an experienced surgeon and geriatrician together.
Hospitals treating hip fracture patients should plan the operating room in such a way that hip fracture surgery is possible within 48 hours after admission.
