On 3 February 2022, L.A.W. Jansen will defend his PhD dissertation, entitled: ‘Medical Psychiatry Units: Organization, Costs, and Effects’.
Patients with medical-psychiatric comorbidity are considered complex and have consistently worse health outcomes and higher costs (1, 2). This is especially true for hospital
inpatients with such comorbidity (3). Medical Psychiatry Units (MPUs) were developed in the 1980s to improve the treatment for these complex patients (4). These units are
staffed with a high nurse to bed ratio and often ran by double boarded nurses and physicians (5, 6). Literature that examines the organization of these units and the impact of
MPU admission on costs and effects is lacking. In this thesis we aimed to fill this gap in literature by describing the development and organization of MPUs, their patients and
the cost and effects associated with MPUs. This is important for the further global development, organization and distribution of integrated hospital care.
