Dissertation in short:
This thesis describes the immunological aspects of sarcoidosis. Sarcoidosis is a systemic disease of unknown origin. In patients with sarcoidosis, the immune system is overly active and granulomas are formed. Virtually any organ can be affected, which leads to a wide range of clinical manifestations. Sarcoidosis can be difficult to diagnose. This thesis describes the research into the expression of proteins, to discover which various cytokines and inflammatory pathways are activated in patients with sarcoidosis. Furthermore, the value of various diagnostic test is assessed, to select which test are useful in the diagnosis of sarcoidosis. Additionally, the use of adalimumab, a biological which can be used to treat sarcoidosis, is studied to asses if long term treatment is safe and effective.
