Antimicrobial resistance is an increasing problem worldwide, amongst others in urinary tract infections, which are common infections, especially in women. An important risk factor for the development of antimicrobial resistance in urinary tract infections is the use of antibiotics. Therefore, this thesis describes the prescribing of antibiotics by GP’s to treat urinary tract infections and compares this prescribing with the Dutch national guidelines. Furthermore, this thesis described possible risk factors to develop antimicrobial resistance in urinary tract infections, such as the use of antibiotics, co-medication and diet. Also, this thesis investigates the microbiota of the genitourinary tract and the gut. It shows the association between the use of different antibiotics and the composition of both the genitourinary and the gut microbiota. It also describes the presence of several common genes that could cause bacteria to become resistant to antibiotics in the microbiota of the human gut. Finally, it investigated whether the composition of the gut microbiota influences the development of a urinary tract infection in women.

Due to the lockdown, the PhD defences will not take place publicly in the usual way. A live stream link has been provided to candidate. The ceremony will begin exactly at 10:30.
