Soft tissue sarcomas are rare tumors of mesenchymal origin such as adipose tissue, muscles and cartilage. Over 50 different subtypes have been described. This thesis consists of 4 parts: the biology of soft tissue sarcomas, the surgical treatment of soft tissue sarcomas, the medical treatment of (metastasized) soft tissue sarcomas and a part on liposarcomas, one of the most commonly observed subtypes. We investigated the genomic landscape of soft tissue sarcomas, genetic varieties within liposarcomas, we developed a radiological model to predict the diagnosis of liposarcoma based on MRI scans, researched ‘active surveillance’ as treatment option for a subtype of the liposarcomas, looked into the centralization of soft tissue sarcoma surgery and survival of metastatic soft tissue sarcoma in the Netherlands and studied whether toxicity of one of the drugs could be associated with the efficacy of the drug.
All projects and studies were the result of a collaboration between the departments op Medical Oncology and Surgical Oncology of the Erasmus MC, but also various other departments and institutes, national as well as international. These collaborations are crucial when investigating a rare disease and to improve the outcome of these patients. Soft tissue sarcoma is now often seen as one entity, but we believe that it is time for a personalized and subtype-specific approach of these tumors.
Due to corona, the PhD defences do not take place publicly in the usual way in the Senate Hall or in the Professor Andries Querido Room. The candidates will defend their dissertation either in a small group or online.
