Summary:
In this thesis we examine cardiovascular risk factors in pregnancy to predict the risk of adverse maternal outcomes, neonatal outcomes, and to predict health in women and their offspring years after pregnancy. We show that the gestational lipid profile in early pregnancy is associated with preeclampsia and blood pressure throughout pregnancy and years after pregnancy. The gestational lipid profile may also be used as a marker for metabolic syndrome in women years later, neonatal growth and children’s long term health. In addition to cardiovascular risk factors, we also examine cerebrovascular health years after pregnancy. Compared to normotensive pregnancies, hypertensive disorders of pregnancy are associated with a decrease in cognitive function and an increase in white matter hyperintensities on the MRI scan.
