Dissertation in short:
Sleep problems are common among older adults with intellectual disabilities living in a care facility. These sleep problems are related to health problems, and in particular mood and behavior problems. Evidence based interventions for sleep problems for this population are scarce. Light therapy has been shown to be an effective treatment for sleep problems and mood complaints in the general population and various clinical populations, such as the elderly with dementia.
This dissertation describes the relationship between light, sleep and mood of older adults with intellectual disabilities living in a care facility, among which an intervention study on the effect of environmental dynamic lighting in the living environment on sleep problems and mood in older adults with intellectual disabilities.
Based on the results of the studies, recommendations are made to provide care of sleep and mood care of older adults with intellectual disabilities, and how lighting in the living environment can support this care.
