On Friday 22 January 2021, S. Rellstab will defend her PhD dissertation, entitled: ‘Balancing Paid Work and Unpaid Care over the Life-Cycle’.
In this thesis, I examine potential labour market effects of creating and maintaining a family at different stages in life. I find that having children has large labour market consequences for women but not for men, as women are more involved in child rearing. In contrast, both women's and men's labour market outcomes are unaffected by an early pregnancy loss or an increase in demand for informal elderly care.
Due to corona, the PhD defences do not take place publicly in the usual way in the Senate Hall or in the Professor Andries Querido Room. The candidates will defend their dissertation either in a small group or online.
