On Wednesday, 8 June 2022, V. Palomares Cabeza will defend her PhD dissertation, entitled: ‘Down To The Bone: Investigating the immune responses in bone tissue engineering approaches using paediatric mesenchymal stem cells’.
Dissertation in short:
Large bone defects that do not heal by themselves represent a challenge for the surgeon and the patient. Traditional approaches involve harvesting bone from another area of the body, causing discomfort for the patients. Bone tissue engineering approaches using mesenchymal stromal cells represent a possible new therapeutic route. Using a potent source of these cells, not from the patient themselves, that does not trigger immune rejection would be ideal. In this thesis, we utilised mesenchymal stromal cells from paediatric patients (pMSCs) and demonstrated their potent abilities to expand and transform into bone tissue without negatively activating immune cells. We also show that this bone formation occurs without a detrimental immune response by using different animal models in which an immune system is present.
Our results indicate that pMSCs are excellent candidates for bone repair, proving that initiation and maintenance of bone formation occurs without a substantial immune response in vitro and in different animal models.
