Below is a brief summary about the dissertation:
Back pain is a common health problem, and prevalent in all ages. Prevalence is highest in adults aged between 40 and 80 years old. Most often back pain is non-specific, and recurrences are common. Treatment for back pain often consists of a combination of patient education, reassurance, and the advice to stay physically active. If needed, pain medications can be used for short periods. The aims of this thesis were 1) to assess the efficacy of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) in patients with acute low back pain, 2) to assess the most effective pain medication approach in patients with (sub)acute sciatica, and 3) to describe the course and prognosis of older adults with back pain.
