With Twisting Thriving Topographies, the Erasmus Gallery presents a solo exhibition by Hadassah Emmerich. The exhibition takes its title from the monumental murals of the same name that she realized in 2026 for the stairwells of the Langeveld building on campus Woudestein, commissioned by Erasmus University Rotterdam.

For this exhibition, Emmerich continued to work with materials, color studies and techniques that also played a role in the creation of the Langeveld murals. This establishes a direct connection between Erasmus Gallery and the architectural environment of the campus. At the same time, the exhibition offers insight into the ways ideas, forms, and materials continue to evolve and transform throughout her artistic practice.
Hadassah Emmerich (1974) lives and works in Brussels. After studying painting at the Maastricht Academy of Fine Arts, she continued her education at the Higher Institute for Fine Arts (HISK) in Ghent and at Goldsmiths College in London. Through her multidisciplinary practice, she explores the possibilities of painting beyond the boundaries of the traditional canvas, allowing painting, architecture, and installation to merge naturally.
Her work is distinguished by a rich visual language of organic shapes, winding lines, lush patterns, and vibrant colors. Motifs reminiscent of plants, landscapes, bodies, and ornaments intertwine into compositions that seem to be in constant motion. Intentionally open to interpretation, her works invite a personal way of looking in which multiple associations can coexist.
Colour takes centre stage
Color plays a central role in this process. Emmerich uses color not only as an aesthetic tool but also as a means of evoking relationships, emotions, and cultural meanings. Warm and cool tones, glossy and matte surfaces, and layered patterns create a sensory experience in which form and meaning continuously shift. As in the murals of the Langeveld Building, a visual world unfolds that grows, meanders, and continues to develop.
Twisting Thriving Topographies resonates with the international and inclusive character of Erasmus University. Emmerich’s work shows how identity, culture, and meaning are not fixed, but are constantly reshaped by encounter, exchange, and transformation. Different influences and image traditions come together in a visual language that embraces plurality and diversity. In her work, differences do not become borders but rather places where new connections can arise.
Visitors are invited to immerse themselves in a colorful and layered landscape in which painting, material and architecture come together. Across both existing and new works, a world unfolds in which imagination, encounter, and connection are central.
