Ever since Recep Tayyip Erdogan rose to power in 2002, the Turkish political landscape has changed much. After a few years of democratization and rapprochement to the EU, Turkish politics entered a maelstrom of conflict and intrigue with (at times) violent and dramatic clashes between political parties. Think of the failed coup in 2016. In the meantime, Turkey’s foreign policy became a turbulent affair full of dramatic twists. With Erdogan’s popularity dwindling over the past few years, the upcoming elections on the 14th of May have become extremely tense. What awaits the country that bridges Asia and Europe?

In this lecture, dr. Dries Lesage will tell you all you need to know about present day Turkey. Geopolitically, it plays a mediating role in the current conflict between Russia and Ukraine while at the same time strong-arming prospective NATO members Sweden and Finland. What does Erdogan aim to achieve with his foreign policy? What does the political landscape look like in Turkey right now? And does the candidate representing the united opposition stand a chance of beating him in May?

He conducts research on key trends and reforms in the multilateral architecture, global tax governance and Turkish politics. He is a member of the newly founded Ghent Institute for European and International Studies (GIES).
