About the workshop
The Municipality of Rotterdam has introduced a digital registration process to make registration faster and more convenient for international students.
During this practical workshop, we will guide you step by step through the online application process, help you prepare the required documents, and answer any questions you may have.
This workshop is especially useful for students who are new to the Netherlands and need support with their first municipal registration and obtaining a BSN.
Programme
On Tuesday 25 and Thursday 27 August we organize two workshops:
- Workshop: How to complete your digital registration with the Municipality of Rotterdam
Date: 25 august 2026
Time: 14.00 – 15:30
Location: Polak 1-20
Workshop: How to complete your digital registration with the Municipality of Rotterdam
Date: 27 august 2026
Time: 11:00 – 12:30Location: Polak 1-17
Registration
Registration will open two months prior to the event
This Workshop is intended for students who:
- Are moving to the Netherlands for the first time
- Will stay in the Netherlands for more than four months
- Have never been registered in the Netherlands before
- Do not yet have a BSN
What to Bring
Please bring your laptop to the workshop and make sure you have digital copies of the required documents ready.
Required Documents
- A digital copy of your passport or ID card
- A rental contract, tenancy agreement, or a “declaration by the main occupant” form
What happens after your application?
After submitting your online application and uploading the required documents, you will receive a confirmation email from the Municipality of Rotterdam.
This email will include:
- Your case number
- A link to schedule your in-person appointment
You will be able to choose a suitable appointment time. Afterwards, you will receive a final confirmation with the appointment date and location.
During the in-person appointment, the municipality will verify your original documents. Once your documents are approved, you will receive your BSN immediately instead of waiting several weeks.
Important Exceptions
- If your address is in a postal code area requiring a housing permit (HVV), you must still visit the municipal office in person. Whether your street requires a permit can be checked through the postcode checker document.
- If you live outside Rotterdam (for example in Schiedam or Capelle aan den IJssel), you must follow the registration procedures of your local municipality.
Further information about the online registration process and required documents can also be found on our website.
