EVR 2019 – Growth of the city

View of rotterdam

On 4 March 2019, the Economic Survey of Rotterdam 2019 (‘Economische Verkenning Rotterdam’, abbreviated as EVR) was presented by the Municipality of Rotterdam in collaboration with various partners. The EVR gives an insight on how the economy of Rotterdam is developing, through different angles.

The EVR 2019 shows, among other things, that employment in Rotterdam has grown five times faster in the past year compared to the average of the surrounding municipalities. According to the Municipality, Rotterdam is shifting from a port economy to a service economy. The employment in the ICT sector, for example, increased by approximately eight percent in 2018. In the hotel and catering industry the increase was even fifteen percent. In addition to the number of jobs, the number of inhabitants of Rotterdam also increased, which were mainly higher educated and young people.

A number of the essays of the EVR 2019 are written by, among others, Frank van Oort (professor Urban & Regional Economics), Jeroen van Haaren (senior researcher Urban Economics and Real Estate), Guiliano Mingardo (senior researcher Transport Economics) and Tony Wijntuin (senior researcher Urban Economics), all members of Erasmus School of Economics.

The entire EVR 2019 can be downloaded below (in Dutch). The various essays can also be found separately on EVR10.nl.
