Fathers do more in the house, they say, since corona crisis

Renske Keizer at Studio Erasmus

Fathers do more care work in the corona-lockdown. But mothers do not do less. The distribution appears to be unequal. Renske Keizer, professor of family sociology, researches with her team the family functioning before and during the corona crisis. In the NRC, she talks about her research.

"The fathers in our study also say that they have started to care relatively more than their partners. However, only highly educated fathers say so. And interestingly, their partners do not confirm this perception."

Asked about the permanence of the change, Keizer says: "Many fathers are not sitting at home out of choice now. The pandemic and its consequences are also causing a lot of financial upheaval, stress and uncertainty for many families. These circumstances, under which a small shift in the division of tasks has been able to take place, are therefore not likely to be repeated by many families."
