Making career development visible with edubadges: the experience of Meike Kiestra (RSM)

Building on campus

Edubadges are digital certificates awarded in higher education through a platform developed by SURF. They offer institutions an innovative way to reward students and staff for their efforts in extra-curricular activities.

Three badges with each a different symbol. The first one has a gear. The second one shows shaking hands and the third one has a lightbulb.

Edubadges are also deployed at Erasmus University Rotterdam, including within Rotterdam School of Management (RSM). Meike Kiestra, Career Development Manager at RSM, shares her experience as coordinator of the edubadge 'RSM Career Centre - Career Fundamentals'.

About this edubadge

Within RSM, the RSM Career Center helps students take their first steps toward the job market. "Our mission is to be a valuable guide for students in their career development," says Meike. In line with this mission, RSM developed the edubadge 'Career Fundamentals'. This badge is awarded to students who attended four essential workshops. During these workshops, they learn how to effectively create a CV, best prepare for a job interview, use LinkedIn strategically, and discover that networking doesn't have to be scary. These valuable trainings offer a solid foundation for a successful career start and contribute to the quality of education at EUR.

"With this edubadge we can offer students something extra that can be valuable to them in the future," Meike said. The edubadge acts as an official recognition of their efforts, which in addition can be added to their LinkedIn profile. Meike says, "if students are active on LinkedIn, this can be valuable to future employers. An edubadge can positively contribute to this."

Request an edubadge

Extra-curricular activities that don't generate performance pressure for students are eligible for an edubadge. The application process went smoothly and efficiently for Meike: "After a conversation and providing a document, the process was already underway. The platform is designed to be user-friendly and accessible." The clear guidelines also helped in quickly developing a badge.

The use of edubadges, such as within these RSM workshops, shows how digitally recognizing skills can motivate and prepare students for a successful future.
