They all have one thing in common and that is that together they want to take responsibility for a fair and just playing field for Rotterdam youth. Or, in technical jargon: promoting equal opportunities in education. That is why representatives of seven Rotterdam civic society organizations convened last November to join forces with the team of the Outreach programme of the Erasmus University Rotterdam (EUR) ‘Connecting out Future’.
This network meeting is the result of earlier visits by the Outreach team to the various organizations and revolves around one main question: How can access to the university be increased for groups of students for whom this is not obvious?
“Children who come to us for help may not go to university by default, but with the right support, some can get there,” said Ugur Arisoy of Stichting Rijnmond Multicultureel Centrum. Zeki Baran, representing Stichting Mara, mentioned that his target group needs role models to better root in the city: “At the gymnasium 40% of the children hit a wall due to a lack of support. Visit that gymnasium and stop the early exit of children of color!”
The Outreach team shared insights into barriers in the Dutch education system and research into the effectiveness of outreach interventions. Outreach interventions appear to work especially if they start early, are personalized and are part of a broad (integrated) offer. This sparked a good group discussion about themes such as poverty, the quality of education, and the lack of representation. EUR student Merve, assisted by her mother, contributed to the discussion by describing her own journey to university. Finally, singer-songwriter Nienke Leone, who was invited to summarize the network meeting, closed the meeting with the touching song Een afslag te vroeg (an exit too early), that she wrote on the spot.
