Back to overview

I studied public administration at Utrecht University between 2000 and 2004. Following my study, I became a junior researcher at the Erasmus School of Health Policy & Management at the Erasmus University. At ESHPM, I did my PhD research on patient and citizen participation in healthcare decision-making. Currently I am working as an associate professor in the Health Care Governance department of ESHPM.

Fields of Interest

My main fields of interest are patient/citizen participation and representation in healthcare decision making and the governance of health care quality.

I am interested in various forms of patient/citizen participation and representation, experiences with participation and representation, and the consequences of an active citizenship policy. I have participated in numerous studies on this subject focusing both on participation on the individual level (e.g. patient self-management) and the collective level (e.g. participation of patient organizations in guideline development, policy making etc. and the role of client councils in health care organizations). Currently I am studying electoral and non-electoral representation in the decentralization process in the Netherlands.

My second line of research is the governance of quality which I study using an institutional layering perspective. On this subject I participated in several studies including the EU funded QUASER project, studying quality work in hospitals across Europe..

Within the Erasmus School of Health Policy & ManagementI coordinate the introduction of online education. In addition I give lectures in several Bachelor and Master courses and supervise master theses.
