Peter Prinzie is hoogleraar Orthopedagogiek i.h.b. diversiteit in opvoeding: determinanten en ontwikkelingsuitkomsten, bij het Department Pedagogische Wetenschappen van de Faculteit der Sociale Wetenschappen. Zijn onderzoek richt zich onder andere op gedrags- en opvoedingsproblemen.
Prinzie, die in 2002 promoveerde aan de Katholieke Universiteit Leuven, werkte hiervoor aan aan Universiteit Leiden en Universiteit Utrecht. Centraal in het onderzoek van prof. dr. Prinzie staat de vraag hoe de complexe interacties tussen de persoonlijkheid van ouder en kind, gecombineerd met opvoeding en andere factoren, de ontwikkeling van kinderen en adolescenten beïnvloeden. Deze vraag wordt vanuit het perspectief van een levensloop bestudeerd. Er is specifiek aandacht voor datgene wat gedrags- en opvoedingsproblemen veroorzaakt én voor de belangrijke transities naar de adolescentie en de jongvolwassenheid.
Prinzie heeft verder expertise opgebouwd in interventiestudies, met als doel opvoedings- en gedragsproblemen te verminderen (‘Alles Kidzzz’) en jongeren te ondersteunen bij rouwverwerking (‘Rouwhulp’). Hij schreef onder meer het boek Waarom doet mijn kind zo moeilijk (2007). Prinzie heeft zich tevens gespecialiseerd in fundamenteel en praktijkgericht onderzoek naar het opvoeden van kinderen en jongeren met een fysieke beperking of met een specifiek genetisch syndroom.
Leerstoel
Binnen de leerstoel richt Prinzie zich op de ontwikkeling en determinanten van gedrags- en opvoedingsproblemen vanuit grootstedelijk en multicultureel perspectief. Ook kijkt hij naar de effecten van interventiestudies bij kinderen met een autismespectrumstoornis en bij kinderen met downsyndroom. Naast het hoogleraarschap aan de Erasmus Universiteit blijft Prinzie verbonden als onderzoekscoördinator in een instelling voor personen met een neuromotorische beperking in België.
