Defence ceremony information session
PhD candidates are advised to attend an information session regarding the practical aspects of the defence ceremony. At this session you will have the opportunity to test your presentation. You have to indicate this on registering for the session. Overview protocol meetings.
You can use a PowerPoint presentation to support your layman's talk (introductory talk). We ask you to bring your presentation on a USB stick and, if possible, also provide a back-up in the form of a second USB stick or in your e-mail. The use of your own laptop is also possible. If you want to use an Apple laptop, we kindly ask you to bring your own converter. The size of the slides should be 16:9. Please note that the presentation view (where your text is displayed below your slides) does NOT work at both locations.
The dress code is the same for both candidates and paranymphs. It is appreciated that you stick to the following guidelines;
- Gentlemen: a dress suit with a white waistcoat and white bow tie, black shoes and black socks. If this is not possible, a clean suit will also do
- Ladies: festive clothing, appropriate to the nature of the ceremony, not too revealing and comfortable shoes
Taking photographs during the graduation ceremony is allowed, except during the 45 minutes of questioning. The photographer does not have to stand on one spot for the photos, it is allowed to walk around. The only condition for taking photographs behind the committee members is that the photographer may not hinder the committee members. You can contact the following photographers if necessary:

For each PhD defence ceremony a Zoom link is created in case someone has to participate online unexpectedly. All committee members (including the chairman and promoters) and yourself receive this zoom link two weeks prior to the ceremony in two separate e-mails. An agenda invitation with only the zoom link and an official invitation in which the zoom link is mentioned again, just to be sure. This zoom link must not be sent to your guests!
Every PhD defence ceremony has a livestream. This livestream is meant for guests who cannot be physically present during your ceremony. You will receive the livestream link as soon as we have it. A recording will also be made of the live stream so that you can enjoy watching it again at a later time.
