Research practice as a PhD candidate

As a PhD candidate, you will encounter many challenges in your work as a researcher. You might have questions about scientific integrity, on how to manage your data responsibly, or where to get your resources. Read more about the practice of working as an academic and the services that Erasmus University Rotterdam offers its academics.

Declaration of Scientific Integrity

All Erasmus University PhD candidates are subject to the Netherlands Code of Conduct for Academic Practice. Within Erasmus University Rotterdam, everyone involved in education and research is responsible for maintaining our research integrity.  In order to vow to comply with these principles you are required to sign a declaration of scientific integrity.

The principles are:

  • Honesty
  • Scrupulousness
  • Transparency
  • Independence
  • Responsibility

Erasmus University Rotterdam has developed a dilemma game specifically focused on professionalism and integrity in research. The dilemma game ‘Professionalism and Integrity in Research’ has become part of the standard training in academic integrity for PhD students and researchers. The game brings to light many of the frequently occurring dilemmas and invites academic staff to discuss these among themselves. The dilemma game is available to all faculties, but there is also an online version.

Open Access

The policy of the Erasmus University is that all scholarly publications have to be made available in Open Access. The Library supports researchers in publishing in Open Access.

Responsible Data Management

Erasmus University Rotterdam works towards open science as a standard. For research data and all academic output this means that they should meet the FAIR principles. Our department of Research Data Management (RDM) concerns the organisation of data, from the very start with your research question to the archiving of valuable results and publishing them.

Open Science Community Rotterdam

The Open Science Community Rotterdam (OSCR) organises and promotes formal and informal events and meetings to discuss open and transparent scientific practices (also termed open science, OS). The community is mainly composed by academic and support staff working at Erasmus University Rotterdam and Erasmus Medical Center. However, it also welcomes other interested individuals and entities that share its common goals.

The OSCR wants to:

  • facilitate communication and sharing of information on OS;
  • increase and speed up the practical adoption of OS;
  • build professional networks and foster scientific collaborations, with OS as an integral part of research.

Safety and Security

As an employer and hosting institute, Erasmus University Rotterdam has a responsibility for your well-being during your fieldwork abroad, its so-called duty of care. You as a PhD candidate also have certain obligations.

Security Guidelines for Researchers

These guidelines assist researchers in conducting their field-based research or fieldwork in hazardous, remote or complex environments as safely and securely as possible. Fieldwork comes with risks, ranging from the mundane risks of car accidents to more exceptional risks of encountering violence.

Checklist: Fieldwork Abroad

Travelling abroad for work always requires prior permission from your supervisor.

Search for outgoing staff in myeur.nl/en for checklists for a short (one day up to a month), temporarily (more than 1 month and less than 2 years) or permanent stays abroad.

Travel insurance provided by the University

Already an employee at EUR, search for business trip abroad in myeur.nl/en for more information about the EUR travel insurance and the terms and conditions.

Travel advice and safety risks for specific countries

The safety assessment of the Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs is the EUR reference for defining the risk of travelling abroad. The classification code of countries is indicated in colours, running from green to yellow, orange and red. See the webpage below.
