Corporate Communication University of Amsterdam, the Netherlands

Class of 2009 (Graduated in 2012)

What was important in making up your mind?
I wanted to do a study that focused more on the business communication aspect, both internally and externally, not limiting myself to one or the other. Therefore marketing, media, and human resources did not fulfill all my criteria.

What made you decide to choose for this master?
The UvA had multiple tracks for MA communication sciences; persuasive communication, political communication, entertainment (youth), and corporate communication. I went to the different information seminars and corporate communication was the one that sparked my interested the most.

How would you describe the connection between IBCoM and your master?
During the IBCoM program I've had courses which covered the topics of internal communication and external communication (e.g. PR, Media and Business). My current study actually has a lot of overlap with the material we covered during IBCoM which offered me a great advantage as I already gained a lot of knowledge on these topics.

How would you describe your master?
A good and intense corporate communication study, meaning that hard work is required. However, the hard work pays of as you work towards a seminar where you get to present your research and get the opportunity to network with practitioners in the field of communication. Teachers have good expertise on their course topics. Additionally, the program offers the opportunity to choose electives from all four tracks allowing you to also expand your knowledge.

In hindsight, what would you have liked to have known before, what you know now?
How much I miss the international study environment (currently the study is offered only in Dutch, which eliminates this study as a choice for a lot of internationals).

What kind of job would you be interested in after this master?
I'm open for anything. I'd like to try some different type of job functions to find where my heart truly lies, internal or external communication.

Any other points you would like to add?
They are working on offering the program fully in English! Right now the material is in English but the seminars and tutorials are in Dutch (papers can be written in both languages but exams are in Dutch). I think this offers the program a great advantage as internationals will also be able to apply for the program.
