The current urban challenge, including economic, social and ecological ones, are persistent and interconnected. In order to tackle these challenges, innovation is not enough: we need systemic, transformative change. This requires translocal collaboration and solidarity between cities and rural regions across different countries and continents. Translocal movements across the world are mobilizing to co-create more sustainable and just cities, and to demand access to basic needs such as housing, energy, water, food, education and healthcare, while respecting future generations and other living creatures. It is time for academics to critically engage more deeply with these movements through interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary research.
