Trends of European Regional Tourism 2008 to 2018: the SMARTDEST project

Erasmus UPT is part of the European project SMARTDEST (H2020), which aims to develop innovative solutions to the externalities that are produced by tourism-related mobilities in cities. Within WP2, researchers Anna Bornioli, Susan Vermeulen and Giuliano Mingardo mapped the evolution of regional tourism in Europe between 2008 and 2018.

Multiple sources were employed (including Eurostat, Labor Force Survey, AirDNA). A work-in-progress database, organised at regional (NUTS2) level, is available at https://doi.org/10.5281/zenodo.4058290 in its preliminary version.

An initial collection of 53 maps was produced. It was found that between 2008 and 2018 regional tourism has grown almost everywhere in Europe, both in absolute terms and in relation to the local population.

The main trends are summarized here: https://smartdest.eu/trends-of-european-regional-tourism-2008-to-2018/
