Erasmus MC PhD candidates follow a different application procedure: see “Application procedure for Erasmus MC PhD candidates”.

For PhD candidates at the Erasmus University Medical Center Rotterdam, a customized application procedure exists.

PhD candidates may start their programme only at the beginning of the academic year. However, you are allowed to sign up for courses that belong to the master programme before the start of your programme. Once admitted, you can request the Examination Board to count up to 14 EC of these courses toward your PhD.

Eligibility requirements are the same as regular applicants to the 70 EC Health Sciences programme. See “Admission”.

The online application form includes fields to upload your documents. Please prepare the following documents:

  1. A letter of motivation in English (max. 500 words!), explaining your wish to apply and the career you wish to pursue.
  2. Your curriculum vitae (résumé), which should be extensive and include the following information:

Each application will undergo a thorough assessment by a program coordinator and an associate program director. They will evaluate whether the applicant aligns with the selection criteria. If the applicant is deemed suitable, an admittance letter will be issued within 6 weeks after the deadline. The applicant is then required to make a commitment decision within two weeks.

If an applicant is considered a good fit but has not yet fulfilled all the selection criteria, a provisional admittance will be granted.

In the event that the selection criteria are not met, and the applicant is deemed ineligible, a rejection letter will be sent within 6 weeks after the deadline. Any rejected student can raise objections by sending an email to graduateschool@erasmusmc.nl

Within six weeks, the candidate can formally appeal against the selection committee's decision with the Dispute Resolution Committee for Non-initial Education (GNIO) of Erasmus University.

PLEASE NOTE: This only applies to the MSc in Health Sciences (70 EC points)
No fees are charged for Erasmus MC PhD candidates, provided they have an account in Hora Finita, the Erasmus University PhD registration system. When submitting the application, you can state that someone else pays your tuition fee.
