In this CLI Lunch & Learn, dr. Marike Polak (ESSB) will introduce a practical, visual approach to support students in reading scientific articles — aligned with their level of research training and embedded in disciplinary teaching.

You’ll explore a series of infographics that guide students through a structured method for reading articles: Orienting – Deep reading – Evaluate & Reflect. This approach is tailored to students’ academic development, from first-year bachelor to master level, and applies to both empirical and review articles.

Infographic highlighting three key steps in reading a research article: orienting, deep reading and evaluate & reflect

Through hands-on demonstrations and lesson ideas, you’ll discover:

  • How to make reading skills explicit within your course design;
  • What the infographics look like and how students can use them;
  • How to freely use and adapt the materials (raw files are available for customization);

These materials were originally developed within the Psychology Bachelor Programme but are widely applicable across the social sciences. They are available on the How to Read Scientific Articles webpage and form part of Marike’s broader CLI Fellowship, focused on embedding academic skills into disciplinary courses.

Curious to explore how to support your students in developing their academic reading skills? Join us for this CLI Lunch & Learn on May 20 from 12:00–13:00!
