Storytelling is an important part of our society and history. It can be used as an educational tool to engage students, spark interest and stimulate critical thinking skills. It creates opportunities for discussion and stimulates a good relationship between teacher and learners.

In this MicroLab you will craft a personal story that helps you motivate your students and target their attention to the topic or issue you want them to focus on. With the help of theatre techniques you will learn to deliver your story in an inspiring and engaging way. Read more.

And are you ready to discover the keys to unlock their motivation using games? Then sign up for this MicroLab! In a playful manner, you will learn practical strategies to use game-based learning in your course. And you will also discover why these strategies are motivating your students at the same time.

In our online escapegame you will solve puzzles to find out different strategies for student motivation. The online escapegame is completely developed within our learning platform Canvas. Therefore, it is a source of inspiration for applying game-based learning elements in your own course.

Do you see your own students collaborating with students from another country within your subject? To offer them a learning experience with students and teachers from a different environment/culture? To achieve this without students going on a physical exchange, Virtual Exchange (VE) can be used. Via VE, students work together on tasks online and in this way develop competences such as collaboration and intercultural communication in addition to professional knowledge. Through VE, ALL students have the opportunity for an international experience and are not hindered by mobility challenges. In addition, VE offers students an interesting different perspective on the content of the course. Examples include exploring health care in both countries or discovering perspectives on behavioral problems or mental disorders.

In this MicroLab you will work on the integration of VE in your course. This MicroLab has been developed in close collaboration with UNIC, a European alliance of eight universities in post-industrial cities in Europe that are committed to stimulating mobility and inclusion with a view to social impact. As research shows, assessment plays an important role in steering the learning process. There is, however, not one best method of assessment. So, how can you select the right methods of assessments for your course? Firstly, you can make an assessment plan to help you select the right method. Then, you are able to decide on the weight of each assessment you have chosen for the final result for your course. An assessment plan also helps to ensure that the assessment addresses the intended learning outcomes.

With an assessment matrix, you will ensure that all the selected learning objectives are covered in your assessment. This also helps to guarantee that your assessment will be both valid and reliable. Read more

Would you like to know more about how to construct (group) assignments and how to grade them? Or are you interested in exploring the opportunities and challenges of alternative modes of assessment, such as process assessment, portfolio assessment, or competency assessment? Then this is the right MicroLab for you!

In this MicroLab you will learn how to construct assignments and alternative modes of assessment for optimal utility (reliability, validity, educational effect, acceptance & cost-efficiency). We will pay special attention to the challenges of group assignments. For assessment methods like oral exams, presentations and essays, it can also be challenging to construct a reliable and transparent grading rubric. Therefore, we will also focus on the possibilities of rubrics to enhance the quality of the assessment. We will look into the construction of a rubric, but also how to organize the grading & feedback process of different types of assessment for optimal reliability and educational effect. This MicroLab has a blended format and consists of online preparation and a workshop. Read more

An important step to take before communicating grades to students is to analyse students’ performance on the different tasks or questions and to investigate the reliability of the grading. This can seem like a daunting task, but in this MicroLab you will discover low-key possibilities to analyse the results on your exam or assignment. This will provide you, as a teacher, with invaluable information. Not only about your students’ performance, but on the quality of your assessment as well as your own teaching. What are the relevant aspects to investigate for you exam or assignment? And how do you draw conclusions and make plans for future improvements? Find out in this MicroLab! Read more.

Formative assessment is one of the most effective strategies in student learning. In this MicroLab you learn how to integrate formative assessment in your course or education. We work based on three steps that we will go through in the MicroLab. These steps are: formulating success criteria associated with learning objectives, design activities you can use to conduct formative assessment, and creating a feedback plan. Because you make an assignment for every strategy, you will ultimately have a basis for the integration of feedback in your course. Read more
