A TRIBUTE TO MILES DAVIS

On May 26, 1926, the legendary trumpeter Miles Davis was born. Like no other, Miles continuously reinvented both himself and jazz. He was known for his brilliant insights and passionate lifestyle. The music he touched would never be the same again.
Kind of Blue, Ascenseur pour l’Echafaud and We Want Miles are among the most legendary albums in jazz history. It is no coincidence that he discovered talents such as Herbie Hancock and Betty Davis, and collaborated with artists including Prince and Chaka Khan.

Miles was also known for his darker side. “The Prince of Darkness” made headlines not only as an uncompromising artist, but also as an outspoken personality who never held back when it came to civil rights. MILES 100 explores and portrays this brilliant figure through poetry, film and music—an artist who continued to create until the very end of his life in 1991.

MICHAEL VAREKAMP

Internationally renowned trumpeter Michael Varekamp was inspired by Miles at an early age and devoted a significant part of his career to him. Together with The Legends, he created the theatrical production Miles! and was a member of the band led by saxophonist Sonny Fortune, Miles’ star soloist in the 1970s.
He toured worldwide with, among others, Miles Davis alumnus Sonny Fortune. He performed at Birdland and Jazz at Lincoln Center in New York, and played with Scott Hamilton, David Murray and Branford Marsalis. In Japan, he received the Kobe Award for exceptional talent.
