Summary:This dissertation develops novel methods to elicit and aggregate subjective information. The methods use people's estimates on other people's judgments (“meta-predictions”). Measurement of beliefs helps us understand the true motives of people. Researchers and policy makers can benefit from this knowledge. Effective aggregation of judgments uses the “Wisdom of Crowds” in decision making. Incentives based on meta-predictions motivate people to be honest in surveys. Information in meta-predictions allows more accurate forecast aggregation algorithms. Social scientists and policy makers use subjective data in decision making. This dissertation presents a new method to improve the quality of subjective data. It also motivates future work on using subjective judgments in decision making.
