Below is a brief summary of the dissertation:
Cardiovascular diseases and esophageal cancer are common and often found late. This thesis develops and tests minimally invasive instruments to detect disease earlier and guide treatment with less burden on patients. We use three imaging modalities: ultrasound (US), photoacoustic imaging (PA), and optical coherence tomography (OCT). Devices progress from benchtop prototypes to designs suited for clinics, with attention to steady image capture, fewer artefacts, clear interpretation, and fit within clinical workflow. Feasibility is shown in coronary artery and esophageal imaging. The results set out practical design choices and checks, note barriers to adoption, and point to a clear path from research to routine care.
