On 30 November 2021, L. Damen will defend her PhD dissertation, entitled: ‘Prader-Willi Syndrome. Long-term growth hormone treatment in young adults, free IGF-I levels, daily cortisol production and oxytocin treatment in children’.

This thesis shows that young adults with Prader-Willi syndrome (PWS) benefit from longer-term growth hormone (GH) treatment. As GH treatment during 3 years after attainment of adult height is able to maintain the improved body composition (with lower fat mass and higher lean body mass) attained during childhood without negative effects on glucose or insulin levels. In addition, the combination of GH and suppletion with sex hormones is able to maintain a stable bone mineral density in females with PWS, while there is a slight decline in the bone mineral density in males. Therefore, adults with PWS should be able to continue GH after attainment of adult height.

The public defence will take place at the Prof. Andries Queridoroom, 3rd floor Education Center, Erasmus MC. The ceremony will begin exactly at 13.00 PM. In light of the solemn nature of the ceremony, we recommend that you do not take children under the age of 6 to the first part of the ceremony.
