Michel van der Wel and Brigitte Hoogendoorn to lead education programmes Erasmus School of Economics

The management team of Erasmus School of Economics has appointed Professor Michel van der Wel as Vice Dean of Education and Dr Brigitte Hoogendoorn as Programme Director. Their appointments come into effect on 1 January 2021. Brigitte and Michel succeed Ivo Arnold, who has successfully led the education programmes in the past fourteen years.

 Close collaboration

Due to numerous developments in the educational landscape, it is no longer feasible to combine all educational responsibilities in one role. Therefore, the management team decided that it is in the School’s interest to appoint both a Vice Dean of Education and a Programme Director. They will work in close collaboration.

The Vice Dean is the strategic sparring partner for the Dean, holds a direct reporting line with him and is a member of the management team. He represents Erasmus School of Economics within university wide consultations and is responsible for developing the long-term vision for education. The Vice Dean is supported by the Programme Director, who will report directly to him and focuses on promoting and assuring the quality and efficiency of our education programmes.

Challenges in education

Michel van der Wel currently works as Professor Econometrics of Macro-Finance at the Econometric Institute. He has ample teaching experience plus an excellent track record with consistently high evaluations of courses from the bachelor to master level. Brigitte Hoogendoorn is Assistant Professor of Entrepreneurship at the Department of Applied Economics. She is currently programme manager of the bachelor programme Economics and Business Economics and coordinator of the School’s Bachelor Honours Class.

"Michel is an enthusiastic ‘all-round academic’, who is well appreciated and capable to connect with colleagues across the School and beyond. Brigitte is very passionate about education and has been managing an excellent programme within the School. I am very happy that Michel and Brigitte are enthusiastic to fulfil their new positions and I have full confidence that they will succeed in leading Erasmus School of Economics through the challenges in education that we are facing", says Patrick Groenen, Dean of Erasmus School of Economics.

Van der Wel: "It is an honour to be able to serve the School as vice dean of education and to succeed Ivo who leaves a great legacy in this role. We are currently going through a demanding period but there are good signs that the end seems to be in sight. Even before the outbreak of the coronavirus pandemic, the broader education landscape has been changing rapidly and the crisis has accelerated some of these developments further, which gives challenges but also opportunities. I look forward to lead the school through this landscape and to work closely on this with Brigitte."
