The Community for Learning & Innovation (CLI) gives lecturers from Erasmus University Rotterdam (EUR) the opportunity to apply for a fellowship. With this fellowship, they research educational innovation, or carry out an educational project.
On this page you can read more about the CLI Fellowship of Jana Vietze (ESSB) about supporting students in navigating their professional and social identities.
In line with university goals to invest in students’ personal and professional development, it is crucial to strengthen students' connection with their study environment and with their future work field from the onset of their studies.
The ReSearching Identity Podcast Intervention aims to increase students’ identification with their future profession through a combination of reflection moments and a podcast recording exercise. Based on the structure of the (Re)Searching Diversity Podcast (CLI innovation project), students will be asked to record an interview with an inspiring and successful professional in the field, who represent important, yet often underrepresented social groups (e.g., gender, ethnic, or socio-economic minorities).
This fellowship project explored if this brief identity intervention and meaningful contact moment with a professional can lead to changes in study-related commitment, motivation, identity centrality and well-being. Importantly, by providing opportunities for students to feel more represented and integrated in teaching practice, the project contributed to more inclusive learning opportunities for our diverse student population at EUR.
Recently, Jana Vietze received the NRO grant ‘Insight into Educational Innovation 2024’, allowing further scaling of the podcast intervention and research on educational podcasting.
Deliverables
The project resulted in 21 educational podcast episodes, reaching listeners in more than 60 countries. The project also resulted in a study testing the usability and effectiveness of podcasting in education (Vietze et al., 2024). Importantly, the podcast has become an integral part of four university programs in Germany and the Netherlands, providing concrete examples, materials and instructions for using teacher- and student-generated podcasts in higher education. In line with Open Education Resources (OER), all educational materials related to podcasting in education are available via the OSF, under a CC-By Attribution 4.0 International licence.
