On Friday 17 June 2022, the Council of Ministers has approved the appointment of Ruben Houweling, Professor of Labour Law at Erasmus School of Law, as new crown member of the Social and Economic Council of the Netherlands (SER). Crown members are independent experts. Besides these independent experts the SER embodies employers' representatives and union representatives.
The SER is the main body to submit solicited (and unsolicited) advice to the Dutch government and the parliament on national and international social and economic policy. Harriët Schelhaas, Dean of Erasmus School of Law, is very pleased with the appointment: ‘With his expertise, Ruben Houweling is the ideal crown member. He has a broad interest and a large substantive knowledge of labour law. Ruben has the ability to connect theory with practice and social developments. Our School is very proud that he joins the SER.’
Ruben Houweling about his appointment: 'I feel enormously honoured and look forward to the Council's work. Society and the labour market face enormous challenges: staff shortages, the growing division in society, the climate (job) challenge and major changes in the way we work (robotisation and digitisation). I look forward to deploying my expertise and thus contributing to a sustainable socio-economic policy.'
About Ruben Houweling
Ruben Houweling (1980) studied Dutch law at Erasmus School of Law. In 2009 he obtained his doctorate and was subsequently appointed as Associate Professor. In 2011 Houweling was appointed as Professor of Labour Law at Erasmus School of Law. Since then, he leads a team of lecturers and researchers that focuses on research and education in the field of Labour Law within the Law & Business department. The Master’s programme in Labour Law is one of the best courses in the Netherlands. Ruben Houweling is core member of the editorial staff of the journal Arbeidsrechtelijke Annotaties (ArA) and (senior)editor of the journals Tijdschrift voor de Arbeidsrechtpraktijk (TAP), Jurisprudentie in Nederland (JIN) and the academic database European Employment Law Cases (EELC) which publishes about relevant judgments by the Court of Justice EU. He developed the interactive digital data bank (VAAN) AR Updates.nl and obtained European funding schemes to support activities in research and education, such as the pan-European (Horizon 2020) research project Working, Yet Poor. In addition to chairing various disputes committees (including ABN Amro and KLM), Houweling is also a deputy justice at the Court of Appeal in The Hague and is associated with law firm DingemansvanderKind as Legal Counsel. He will combine his membership of the SER with his professorship and other ancillary activities.
