Biography
René van Vliet is associate professor of statistics in the Department of Health Policy and Management at Erasmus University Rotterdam. He holds a doctoral degree from that same university. His main research interests are in the fields of health insurance and health economics. He has published in international journals like: Social Science and Medicine, Journal of Risk and Insurance, Health Economics, Health Affairs, Journal of Health Economics, Health Policy, Medical Care, Inquiry, Health Care Management Science, Applied Economics, International Journal of Health Care Finance and Economics, and European Journal of Health Economics.
Main areas of research
- The impact of insurance coverage on medical consumption and health care costs, a.o. the disentanglement of the 'pure' insurance effect (moral hazard)
- The risk adjustment mechanisms necessary for financing health plans fairly and in such a way that risk selection is avoided. His latest research in this field centres around using diagnostic information - deduced from either previous hospitalizations or specific medications - to improve the risk adjustment system for Dutch health care insurers.
