A campus is more than its buildings — it's shaped by who can move through it, work in it, and feel welcome in it. As EUR's campus continues to develop, inclusion and accessibility are a deliberate part of that process. Inclusion and accessibility are part of the systemic approach to sustainable development that shapes how we build, plan, and maintain the campus more broadly.
Our ambition
EUR is working towards a campus that is accessible and usable for everyone: students, staff and visitors alike, regardless of physical ability, gender identity, or other individual needs. This also means creating open, flexible and multipurpose spaces that support transdisciplinary collaboration, hybrid work and dialogue with citizens and non-academic partners. Inclusion isn't an add-on to how our campus is planned and maintained; it's being built into the structures and policies that shape campus life for the long term.
Physical accessibility
Following a full accessibility audit in 2022, EUR identified a list of concrete improvements needed across campus, with planning and budget allocated through to the end of 2027.
Improving the campus
This means that Real Estate & Facilities (RE&F) has worked on improving the physical accessibility of the campus in recent years. Improvements have been made to routes and entrances, such as paving works around the Plaza and the new wheelchair ramp at the Erasmus Building. Glass markings as well as warning markings near stairs and steps have been added to several buildings. New innovations have been tested and approved, like flexible table arms in lecture rooms for wheelchair users and audio support equipment in lecture rooms. A wheelchair ramp is now also available in the Senaatzaal, ensuring that everyone can access the lectern to present.
Work is continuing in 2026 and 2027. Planned measures include the placement of tactile guidance lines across the campus and further improvements to lift facilities. Additional wayfinding elements will also be introduced across campus and in buildings.
EUR has also developed a Physical Accessibility Policy. The policy provides a framework for incorporating accessibility into the development, maintenance and renovation of buildings and campus facilities. This means that accessibility is considered not only when existing problems are addressed, but also in future maintenance projects, renovations and new construction.
The policy is based on three principles: findability, usability and accessibility. These principles are translated into technical requirements. They are intended to be applied in tenders, maintenance projects, renovations and new construction. The implementation of the policy will be monitored and evaluated annually. This allows EUR to respond to changes in legislation and regulations, new insights and experiences from campus users.

Inclusive facilities
All gender toilets
Everyone should feel comfortable and safe when using basic facilities such as toilets. As part of its commitment to an inclusive campus, EUR has introduced all-gender toilets in the education buildings on Woudestein campus. All-gender toilets are available to everyone, regardless of gender identity.
This does not mean that men's and women's bathrooms have been removed. Instead, existing toilet facilities have been adapted to create all-gender options alongside the existing facilities.
Where to find all-gender toilets?
To make the toilets easy to find and create a consistent approach across campus, EUR has chosen the entrance floors of educational buildings as the standard location for all-gender toilets. In most cases, this is the ground floor. The aim is to make them easy to find and to avoid that users have to search for an all-gender toilet.
At locations where urinals are present, signage indicates this at the entrance, allowing users to choose the facility that best meets their needs.
Menstrual products
Menstrual products are available in four toilet locations across campus, alongside additional student- or staff-led initiatives providing similar support.
